For the past couple of years Spokes and Spurs has been generously invited by Steve Wilson and Laura Lee Brown to their Woodland Farm post Derby brunch.
Breathtaking views of beautiful fields, buffalo, fuzzy eared Poitou donkeys, pink Italian snails and the Kentucky River greeted guests as they arrived at the historic home of Steve and Laura. The weather was much more cooperative this year and after a tour of their home and the interesting art housed there, we were treated to a delicious brunch on the patio, back dropped by a fabulous jazz band.
At noon, the drivers all headed out and hitched up for a scenic and relaxing drive around the farm. We took a small detour and ended up down on the river where the Mule Footed Hog operation was based. This heritage breed originated with the Native Americans, and while critically endagered, it is making a comeback because of it's tasty meat. After the river bottom visit, Noah went to work and pulled the three of us back up the long road to the house. Once we got on the road we were supposed to be on we enjoyed a beautiful and quite drive. It was a good thing we knocked the edge of Noah with the river road trek, because he wasn't at all sure about the big pink snails. He handled the snails and the buffalo running toward us all in stride though so it was a good day at the farm. Buffalo, while kind of funny looking creatures, are really quite athletic compared to a cow and have a very nice lope. I wonder if anyone has ever ridden one.
Many thanks to our hosts.
