After going through the latest ice storm in Kentucky and because I work as an IT professional and see how users react to technology, I know how true this video is. We all take things for granted and it was amazing to see how many people during the ice storm did not understand how the appliances and power worked in their homes. I admit to being one of the ignorant, but hopefully I have picked up enough information to not be left out in the cold should something like this happen again.

Something that I noticed during the ice storm but I have not comment on yet was the incredible blackness during the first night of the ice storm. We live on one of the highest points in Mercer county so I can see the lights of Lexington, Wilmore, Versailles, Harrodsburg, Salvisa, etc on the horizon, but in the early hours after the storm hit, we were surrounded by almost complete darkness. There were faint glowes from Lexington and Dix Dam but other than that, there were no lights. As I was taking the darkness in, I reflected on how incredible our utility systems are and how amazing it is that they can provide power to so many people.
Every morning I would look out the window to see more and more dots of light reappearing. We are very fortunate.
